Mahanihani Launch Success

Despite fierce westerly winds - you could (kindly) call them ‘challenging conditions’ we had 40 - 50 helpers on site to launch the Mahanihani project at Manukau Heads. Bit daunting at 10am to see all those plants lined up ready for action, but so many people worked so hard and - just a few hours later there were 2,000 more plants in the ground! All very healthy, and all grown at our Awhitu Landcare nursery. Let’s hope their eco-sourced start in life means a good proportion of them will stand up to the extreme conditions they will face on that site. Fantastic effort, huge thumbs up to all concerned, we really, really appreciate it. Hopefully Leonie’s marvellous spread at Awhitu Central sent everyone home warm, full, and happy.

Monique Jansen van Rensburg from Auckland Council, (without Steve from DOC and Monique this project would probably not have got off the ground), also commented:

“I echo Steve’s sentiments - what a phenomenal achievement!  I have been telling everyone here at Council how magnificent the planting was and how the enthusiasm was unsurpassed. And the spread, Leonie is a wizard.  So generous. Thank you for your incredible drive, Steve and all at Awhitu Landcare, for your hard work and tireless energy.  I am so proud of what you have achieved.  I look forward to seeing this project move from strength to strength.”

Here are a few photos - befores, during and afters - but they cannot hope to do justice to what was achieved - our first day at Mahanihani and hopefully many more in years to come.
